CenterWell Senior Primary Care’s value-based care model and organizational leadership sets physicians up for success, especially when it comes to tackling burnout
As a physician, I've always found purpose and fulfillment in caring for others. It’s a calling that requires empathy, dedication and a tireless commitment to improving the lives of patients. However, like many of my colleagues, I’ve faced the unfortunate, yet common, effects of working in this profession: burnout. The emotional and physical toll of long work hours, rigid schedules and increasing pressures of administrative demands left me questioning whether I could continue in a field I loved.
Burnout is a pervasive issue in medicine today. It doesn’t just affect our work; it permeates every aspect of our lives. For me, exhaustion and stress began to impact my relationships with patients, family and colleagues. I found it difficult to engage meaningfully with others, whether in a patient consultation or at home with my loved ones. The loss of autonomy in my practice and the constant pressure to prioritize the quantity of patients seen over the quality of care delivered further deepened my dissatisfaction.
The turning point in my career came when I discovered CenterWell Senior Primary Care, along with its sister brand, Conviva Care Centers. What attracted me to CenterWell was its unique value-based care model and team-based approach to holistic wellness. By joining their team, I found an environment where both patients and physicians are supported in ways that truly matter. The emphasis on a collaborative care team, where physicians have a say in office flow and patient care decisions, was a breath of fresh air. This model not only improved my work-life balance but also reignited my passion for medicine.
CenterWell’s value-based care model prioritizes patient outcomes rather than the volume of services provided. This approach allows me to spend more time with each patient – often up to 50% more time than typical provider appointments – developing deeper relationships and truly understanding their needs. It’s a stark contrast to the traditional fee-for-service model that often feels like a race against the clock, leaving little room for meaningful interaction. At CenterWell and Conviva, the focus is on delivering holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional and social aspects of health, which aligns perfectly with my own values as a physician.
The support I receive from CenterWell has been nothing short of extraordinary. The onboarding process was seamless, and from day one, I felt valued and supported. The flexibility in scheduling allows me to balance my professional responsibilities with my personal life, including caring for my young daughter and being present during important events in her life. Daily huddles with my care team and regular interactions with administrators ensure I always have the resources and support needed to provide the best possible care to my patients.
CenterWell’s commitment to its physicians goes beyond just logistical support. The organization fosters a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement in which feedback is not only welcomed, but also actively encouraged. This culture has empowered me to take an active role in shaping the way we deliver care, ensuring that both my patients and I can thrive.
For those of you who are struggling with burnout, my advice is to take a step back and reflect on some goals you have for both you and your practice. Burnout doesn’t have to be the end of your medical career, and there are opportunities out there that can help you find fulfillment in practicing medicine again. Talk to your colleagues, seek out supportive environments and don’t be afraid to make a change if your current situation isn’t working for you.
The journey from burnout to balance isn’t easy, but it’s possible. CenterWell provided the support, flexibility and sense of purpose that I needed to reignite my passion and improve outcomes for my patients. I’m grateful every day for the opportunity to work in an environment where my well-being is valued as much as the care I provide for my patients.
Whether you’re a seasoned physician or just starting out, remember that your ability to care for others is directly tied to how well you care for yourself. If you’re constantly feeling overwhelmed, exhausted and stressed, maybe it’s time for a change. It could be the best decision you ever make for yourself and your patients.
