Physician and patient perception: quantifying their perceptions, part 1

A cognitive psychologist discusses causal beliefs, patient decisions and disclosures, and how those affect health care.

Researchers have ways to quantify people’s perceptions, including perceptions about interactions between doctors and patients. Jessecae K. Marsh, PhD, is co-author of a study, “Perceived Penalties for Sharing Patient Believes with Health Care Providers.” Here she explains how patients used vignettes and imagination to envision an interaction with a patient and physician. Then they explained their perceptions about patients when patients shared correct or incorrect information. Additional authors are Onur Asan, PhD, and Samantha Kleinberg, PhD, both of the Stevens Institute of Technology.
