Waiting for H1N1 vaccine codes

No code has been assigned to report the administration of the upcoming H1N1 vaccine or the vaccine itself. Codes will likely be assigned around October 1.

A: We are unaware of a code assigned to report the administration of H1N1 vaccine or the vaccine itself, although a new range of ICD-9 codes has been established to report the illnesses (488-influenza due to certain identified influenza viruses). Medicare codes are expected to be updated around October 1, about the time that the vaccine is expected to be available. It is likely that codes to report the immunization and vaccine will be assigned around that time. (Rex Stanley, CEO of Unicore Medical Inc., contributed to this answer.)
