Simple But Good Advice

A few simple tips can go a long way toward keeping you in good health. The same is true for your financial health.

The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency has a terrific program called “Live Well San Diego.”

Part of the program is building better health. Building better health focuses on three behaviors:

1. Exercise

2. Eat Right

3. Don’t Smoke

It’s simple advice, but it will save lives because it will prevent four diseases: Cancer, heart disease and stroke, type 2 diabetes, and lung disease. If everyone follows this advice it would cut deaths in San Diego by over 50%. Exercise, eat right, and don’t smoke. It's simple advice that saves lives.

Here’s my simple advice for saving financial lives:

1. Start saving for retirement early.

2. Use an indexed universal life insurance policy as your primary retirement savings vehicle.

3. Live within your means.

It’s simple and basic, but it’s good advice.

Ask anyone who has heart disease, lung cancer, or diabetes if they wish they had followed that advice. What do you think they would say? They would probably say they wish they had followed that advice.

Start saving for retirement early. Use an indexed universal life insurance policy as your primary retirement savings vehicle.

Live within your means is also simple and basic, but it’s good advice.

Ask any physician in his or her late 40s, 50s, or 60s who’s worried about retirement if they wish they had followed that advice. What do you think they would say? They would probably say they wish they had followed that advice.

One last thing: If you're already in your 40s, 50s, or 60s, it's not too late, you just need to get started today.
