According to the American Hospital Association, there are more than 5,700 hospitals in the US. They range in size from small community medical centers to massive for-profit hospital campuses.
Those hospitals have just shy of 1 million staffed beds.
More than half of US hospitals are nonprofit community hospitals. About 1,000 are for-profit medical centers, and another 1,000 are owned by local and state governments.
The largest hospitals tend to be in major cities in predictable states. California has 3 of the top 10 hospitals, when ranked by net revenue. New York, Florida, and Texas also make the list.
What follows is a list of the 10 largest US hospitals based on net patient revenue from 2013. The data come via Billian’s Health Data, via Statista.com. Staffed bed figures are from the American Hospital Directory.
