An unclear partnership: A look at collaboration between physicians and APPs

Author(s):

New research explores some of the reasons why physicians and APPs don't always collaborate as well as they should.

Advanced practice providers, nurse practitioners and physician assistants, have always played a role on the health care team. But in the past, they always worked with physician supervision. Now, many states have granted them independent practice authority, and as the physician shortage grows worse, their role within primary care has become unclear. This confusion can lead to poor patient outcomes and general workplace friction.

Lisa Rotenstein, MD, MBA, assistant professor of medicine at the University of California - San Francisco, discusses her research: An Unclear Partnership: Key Questions about Physician and Advanced Practice Provider Collaboration in Primary Care.
