Association president notes proposed cut to physician reimbursement is disappointing, but there are other items to be aware of in next year’s plan by CMS.
The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services published the draft 2025 Physician Fee Schedule on July 10.
Since then, doctors, medical organizations and others have focused on the proposed 2.8% reduction in physician reimbursement proposed for next year – understandably so. But the physician reimbursement rate was not the only change that CMS announced with the physician fee schedule.
AOA’s public policy staff compiled “Navigating the CMS Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule,” an overview of the program changes that could planned for 2025. This slideshow features parts of the AOA analysis. The full version is available online.
As for the physician reimbursement decrease, AOA noted the cut will happen as CMS estimates physicians’ practice operating costs will go up by 3.6% in the same time, said Ira Monka, DO, FACOFP, president of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).
News of the reduction is disappointing, Monka said in a statement.
“The AOA will advocate to prevent these payment cuts from taking effect and will work to ensure long-term, comprehensive physician payment reform that accounts for inflationary adjustments,” Monka said. “Without reforms to the Medicare physician payment methodology, consolidation and physician shortages will worsen, as will patients’ ability to access care.”
