Which states were paying primary care physicians the least in 2023?

Primary care physicians may see their income rising, but some doctors in some states are making $250,000 more than others.

The 2024 MGMA DataDive Provider Compensation report looked at 2023 data from more than 211,000 physicians and advanced practice providers and found that primary care physicians saw the largest gains among providers with a 4.44% increase in compensation between 2022 and 2023.

According to the report, the difference between what the top state and the worst state paid their primary care physicians was $252,379. Here are the five worst states for primary care doctor pay.
