81% of physicians: 'Technical proficiency is as important as clinical expertise'

Author(s):

Physicians spend an average of 22 personal hours per month learning about new health care technology, says Sermo survey.

On February 24, 2025, Sermo, a physician engagement platform, released their 37th Barometer, revealing that 81% of physicians believe technical proficiency is as important as clinical expertise in today's health care landscape.

The findings underscore the increasing need for physicians to not only master clinical skills, but also navigate new technologies to enhance care delivery and patient outcomes.

"Technical proficiency is no longer a 'nice-to-have' — it's a necessity as a modern provider," said Kyle Lee, BMLSc, BMBS, MPH, CCFP, medical advisory board member, Sermo. "As physicians, we recognize that mastering clinical skills forms the foundation of our practice, but without the ability to effectively leverage advanced technologies, we risk falling behind in providing optimal care. The integration of both skill sets allows us to diagnose faster, treat smarter, and ultimately enhance patient outcomes."
