Rep. Maxine Waters introduces bill to improve maternal mental health in underserved communities

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-California 43rd District) has introduced the “Mamas and Babies in Underserved Communities Act,” aimed at expanding maternal and infant health services in low-income, rural and minority communities. The bill proposes a competitive grant program to enhance prenatal, postnatal and postpartum care. With Medicaid covering more than 40% of U.S. births, Waters warns that potential budget cuts could worsen maternal health disparities. The CDC estimates that more than 80% of pregnancy-related deaths are preventable. The full text of the bill can be read here.

USPSTF seeks public input on cognitive impairment screening plan

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has released a draft research plan on screening for cognitive impairment in adults aged 65 and older. The research plan is available for review and public comment until April 2, 2025. The plan can be found here, and a public comments can be left here.

High prevalence of anxiety and depression among adults with chronic pain

A recent systematic review and meta-analysis published in JAMA Network Open found that approximately 40% of adults with chronic pain experience clinically significant symptoms of depression or anxiety. The study analyze data from 376 studies comprising 347,468 individuals across 50 countries. Prevalence rates were higher among women, younger individuals, and those with nociplastic pain conditions, like fibromyalgia.
