Increased step count could counter depression symptoms
According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open, a higher daily step count is associated with fewer depressive symptoms. The study was a meta-analysis of 33 studies of nearly 100,000 adults, and data suggested that the number of steps linked to reduced depression symptoms are fewer than usually advertised.
“We typically hear it’s good to get 10,000 steps a day, but here, even 7,000 steps seem to translate to better mental health,” Karmei Choi, PhD, explained, elaborating that as little as 1,000 extra steps in a day could reduce the risk of depression by as much as 9%.
