News: IT group looks to certify PHRs

The CCHIT wants to launch a certification program for PHRs, such as Google Health and applications under Microsoft's Health Vault platform, by mid-2009.

The Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology, the nonprofit group charged by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to certify electronic health record systems, has spread its wings to personal health records.

The CCHIT wants to launch a certification program for PHRs, such as Google Health and applications under Microsoft's HealthVault platform, by mid-2009. The program will emphasize privacy, security, and information-sharing capabilities.

In September, the commission unveiled the first draft of its plan to test PHRs and is seeking public comment through October at http:// http://cchit.org/participate/public-comment/. According to the CCHIT, input is sought from doctors as well as patients who use PHRs. To learn more about PHRs, go to http://memag.com/PHRdoc.
