Add Illinois to the list of states VillageMD is leaving.

Multiple news sources report that the company will shutter its six Illinois locations, all in the Chicago area, on April 19. This follows its February 22 announcement of plans to close all its locations in Florida, which had been one of its largest markets, by March 15. At the start of the year the company closed all 12 of its clinics in Indiana.

Chicago-based VillageMD operates retail health clinics through its Village Health subsidiary. The company is majority owned by Walgreens Boots Alliance. Most of its clinics are located inside or adjacent to Walgreens stores. The Village Health website lists 680 practices in 26 markets spread across 13 states.

In January 2023 VillageMD purchased physician practice group Summit Health-CityMD for $8.9 billion, making it one of the country’s largest independent provider groups.

Last fall, on the heels of a net $3.1 billion loss for the fiscal year, announced plans to close approximately 60 clinics and exit five markets. The company said it expected the closures, along with other cost reductions, to produce about $1billion in savings, according to Becker’s Hospital CFO Report.

In January of this year Walgreens-Boots said its U.S. health care segment had an unadjusted first quarter operating loss of $436 million on sales of $1.9 billion. Adjusted operating losses were $96 million, down from $152 million the previous year.
